Essential Functions:

 • Teach courses in introductory biology and human anatomy and physiology, and may teach animal physiology, genetics, cell biology or other specialty courses within the biomedical field.

• Responsible for teaching undergraduates through active learning pedagogy and will show aptitude and inclination for engaging students in research, both through individual mentored research as well as course-embedded undergraduate research experiences. Responsible for teaching and mentoring masters-level graduate students.
• Develop and implement a program of instruction that meets the needs, interests, and abilities of students and is consistent with University requirements.
• Assess student abilities as related to desired educational goals and objectives, in order to maximize student achievement.
• Plan and employ a variety of appropriate instructional/learning strategies and activities that serve the needs and capabilities of the students and are compatible with the physical facilities.
• Manage student behavior in the classroom.
• Continually communicate to students (either in writing or verbally) instructional expectations, as well as student progress.
• Actively participate in and work with University personnel in planning effective instructional goals, objectives, methods, and curriculum.
• Exhibit a commitment to scholarly activities and engage in professional, university, and community service.
• Participate in professional growth activities including staff meetings, in-service, and staff development as required or assigned.
• Assist in the documentation of student progress by efficiently maintaining and submitting appropriate records and reports.
• Ensure that the classroom or instructional environment is healthful, safe, and conducive to learning.
• Participate in extra-curricular activities as requested by the head of the department or the Dean of the School of Science.
• Serve on various committees.
• Belong to educational/professional associations (within concentration) and participate in their activities.
• Take attendance and keep attendance registers, according to JSU policy.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the department head.


Required Minimum Qualifications:

 

• An earned doctorate or ABD with completion date by May 1, 2018 in one of the content areas managed within the Department of Biology.

• Accomplishments sufficient to indicate the ability to meet requirements of the rank of Assistant Professor Biology at JSU in teaching, service, and scholarly publications.


Preferred Qualifications:

• Ability to teach upper-level physiology courses

• Research in a biomedical area
