University Student Assistant - The Chanticleer Editor-In-Chief - SPRING/SUMMER 2018

Essential Functions:

The University Student Assistant / Chanticleer editor-in-chief is required to plan, manage, and supervise the weekly production and distribution of the Chanticleer during the fall and spring semesters. This position is responsible for overseeing the newspaper staff with the assistance of the Manager of Student Media. The editor-in-chief must work closely with the faculty advisor on all matters relating with the content and production of the newspaper, and is required to follow The Society of Professional Journalist Code of Ethics.

  • Maintains confidentiality of information.
  • Organizes the assignments and supervises the staff of the newspaper daily.
  • Recruits and trains volunteer writers, photographers, and editors.
  • Conducts regular staff meeting to plan for the weekly production of the newspaper.
  • Arranges training sessions for editors, writers, photographers, and others involved in the production of the newspaper.
  • Meets regularly with the faculty advisor to discuss issues as they arise with the weekly production of the weekly newspaper.
  • Prepares and revises The Chanticleer Policy Manual with the consultation of the advisor.
  • Represents The Chanticleer at the public and professional meetings on campus and off campus.
  • Meets regularly with student and faculty groups, university administrators and community groups to discuss current events and to assess the effectiveness of the newspaper coverage.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be able to work nights and weekends
  • Applicants must be enrolled as a JSU student taking at least three (3) hours per fall or spring semester.
  • If not a first time student, applicant must have a GPA of 3.00 or higher.
  • Applicants must attach under “Transcript” an unofficial copy of their student transcript or class registration as evidence of student enrollment and GPA.

Notice Regarding International Students:

    • All International Students must receive clearance for employment from the International House and Programs.
    • Due to Visa requirements international students must be enrolled as a full-time JSU student and possess each of the following:
  1. Passport from their respective country.
  2. F-1 Student Visa or J-1 Exchange Student Visa.
  3. U.S. Customs Form I-94.
  4. Official photo identification.
  5. Official Social Security Card imprinted with “Valid for Work Only” or similar statement.
