Normal Work Schedule: 

7:30am-4:30 Monday-Friday, Call maybe required 

Job Summary:  

The HVAC Mechanic II works at the journeyman level to perform service and maintenance on various refrigeration and air conditioning installations and equipment. Tasks are completed according to established trade practices under the direction of a senior level HVAC mechanic or the HVAC supervisor, and is reviewed for compliance with instructions and adequate completion. The HVAC Mechanic II works rotating shifts; special situations or emergencies may necessitate reporting on a scheduled off-day.

Essential Functions: 

  • Hazards of the job and appropriate safety precautions. 

  • Operation of steam and hot water boilers. 

  • Refrigeration units and their maintenance and repair to include high pressure, low pressure, and small appliance. 

  • Low voltage, high voltage, and electrical equipment including starters, relays and disconnects; amp meters and voltmeters. 

  • Effective time management skills. 

  • Strong analytical skills. 

  • Organized, attentive to detail, and customer-focused. 

  • Excellent interpersonal skills. 

  • Active listening skills to help ensure the needs of all parties are considered and represented. 

  • Quick thinking and solutions oriented. 

  • Work and communicate effectively with diverse populations. 

  • Use diplomacy and discretion when giving out information and referring callers and visitors; deal with the public in a pleasant but effective manner. 

  • Meet schedules and deadlines related to the role. 

  • Demonstrate flexibility in approaching tasks. 

  • Determine work priorities, plan and organize a variety of work duties; delegate effectively to others. 

  • Develop and maintain professional work relationships with administrators, co-workers, faculty, students, and the general JSU community. 

  • Read operating manuals and work orders written in English. 

  • Write to a level sufficient to record basic information regarding building conditions, keep simple records, and provide information on malfunctioning equipment. 

  • Follow oral and written instructions. 

  • Climb ladders and stairs, stoop, bend, reach, enter confined spaces (e.g. manholes and crawl spaces), lift and carry motors by hand or with lifting devices. 

Required Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Associates degree from a regionally accredited college or university 

  • 1-2 years’ relevant work experience 

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Two-year degree from technical college in HVAC required. 

  • Four years full time work experience in commercial HVAC required. 

  • Valid Alabama driver’s license. 

  • Possession, at the time of hire, of a universal refrigerant transition and recovery certification issued by EPA.
