Normal Work Schedule:

8:00 am - 4:30 pm, Monday – Friday, occasional weekend or evening

Job Summary:

To assist the School of Human Services and Social Sciences with advising Freshman and Sophomores majoring in the academic departments when needed, completing graduation certification each academic semester, assisting with all orientation and registration sessions.  Assist the Dean as needed.

Essential Functions:

  • Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point), and Adobe Acrobat
  • English language to include effective writing and speaking skills
  • Learning theories, instructional methods, and appropriate intervention strategies for students experiencing academic difficulties
  • The university’s core curriculum and academic standards
  • Student development, theoretical approaches to academic advising, and the ability to utilize data and student success
  • Effective time management skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Organized, attentive to details, and customer focused
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Monitoring and assessment skills to help ensure necessary enhancements and/or corrective action is taken
  • Active listening skills to help ensure the needs of all parties are considered and represented
  • Quick thinking and solutions oriented
  • Work effectively with diverse populations
  • Compose a variety of memoranda and correspondence without instructions
  • Use diplomacy and discretion when giving out information and referring callers and visitors
  • Meet schedules and deadlines related to the role
  • Demonstrate flexibility in approaching tasks
  • Determine work priorities
  • Develop and maintain professional work relationships with administrators, co-workers, faculty, and students, and the general JSU community
  • Collect, assess and report on data related to campus-wide academic enhancement
  • Prepare and effectively present training programs to the academic community and other large groups
  • Provide academic advisement to students who are in categories of unsatisfactory academic performance as well as those who have not decided a major
  • Knowledge of banner and higher education software systems

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Student Personnel, or Psychology, or closely related field,
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ related experience in the university environment, including extensive student contact, and
  • Experience in higher education administration working with students

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree preferred.
