Job Summary:

The Print & Production Specialist provides technical and support services in the functions of printing, graphic design, and production operations, bindery, quality and final checks on end products, cost analysis of customer jobs, establishing and maintaining production schedules for University offices, student organizations, and other auxiliary service entities, and assisting with shipping and receiving of products and supplies.

Essential Functions:

  •   Runs high volume copy machines and performs binding and finishing work.
  •   Operates printing presses, cameras and other production equipment as needed in the functions of the role. 
  •   Operates high-speed digital color and black & white copiers, high speed color envelope printer, and square-back booklet maker to saddle stitch, trim lead edge and fold printed material into booklets.
  •   Creates well designed publications including brochures, cards, banners, promotional materials for internal and external customers, while ensuring all marketing material, including adverting, positively reflects the programs and services offered by the University for on and off campus needs, and that of all customers.
  •   Uses appropriate tools and materials for making signs, banners, labels, vehicle wraps, maps, architectural drawings, backlit displays and posters for indoor and outdoor applications. 
  •   In collaboration with the Department of Marketing and Communication, participates in the development of marketing and University branding strategies, and the resolution of related issues.
  •   Utilizes graphic software to prepare flyers, pamphlets, invitations and other documents for customers.
  •   Assists with developing the overall layout and production design for advertisements, brochures, magazines, banners and reports, providing input from a graphic design perspective as well.
  •   Creates, adjusts, and manipulates digital files using Command Work Station/Fiery software/application to create booklets, multi-up/gang-up, and business cards, and to add/remove pages, rotate pages, changes pages sizes, and merge files.
  •   Under the direction of the Director, serves University stakeholders (students, faculty, and students) and external customers by gathering design information and overseeing the production of products.
  •   Maintains inventory of paper, envelopes, chemicals, cleaners, coils, toner, staples, and glue.  
  •   Calculates charges for jobs performed and maintains some billing logs.
  •   Responds to and coordinates all service calls required by customer.
  •   Coordinates the delivery of completed jobs to pre-determined customer locations within and outside of the site.
  •   Answers customer questions regarding status or feasibility of job requests.
  •   Troubleshoots copier hardware, software, and component failure if necessary.
  •   Utilizes University’s financial system to post/withdraw internal transaction, print budgets of different departments and for monthly billing process for all copy machines.
  •   Reviews material received from customers, prepares layout of pages for books, pamphlet or other documents.
  •   Accesses customers’ job requests via the email, jump/flash drive, CDs/DVDs, and shared network folders to open, adjust and print jobs.
  •   Collates, binds, staples, folds, and trims printed material as needed using collating, binding, stapling, and folding machines and a hydraulic cutter.  
  •   Maintains communication with customers, obtains printing orders, makes appropriate recommendations related to customer requirements, provides estimates, and information on completion timeline.
  •   Coordinates priorities at various stages of the printing process for maximum cost effectiveness.
  •   Assists in maintaining university-printing standards. 
  •   Receives and processes all payments for services provided, and maintains accurate records of financial transactions. 
  •   Perform related work as required or assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, or
  • Any combination of education, training, and experience which demonstrates ability to perform the duties and responsibilities as described, including progressively responsible experience working in business printing and production, and
  • At least (4) four years’ experience in offset press printing, bindery or high volume print network
  • Experience using rip (raster image processor) software
  • Eexperience operating offset presses, and related equipment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, or related field
  • Completion of a two-year program in printing/graphic arts from a vocational/technical school and two years of experience may be substituted
  • Experience with the use of Adobe Creative Suite
