Normal Work Schedule:

8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.  Monday-Friday, with the ability to work evenings and weekends as needed

Job Summary:

The Major Gifts Officer creates and implements a comprehensive development program for the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of major gifts (individual pledges and gifts of $25,000 or more) to obtain general operating, endowment, and capital funds for an assigned School. Assists the Director, Academic Development to achieve overall development objectives and departmental goals for the University. Is assigned to a specific School and assists the Dean with School fundraising priorities. Teams with University level administration, faculty, and the University’s Board of Visitors to achieve fundraising goals.

Essential Functions:

  • Develops a comprehensive fundraising plan for assigned School in conjunction with the Director, Academic Development.
  • Executes strategies for identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewarding of major donors and key volunteers for assigned School.
  • Manages an ongoing portfolio of 75-125 prospects and donors.
  • Conducts prospect research and identification leading to the cultivation and solicitation of individual major gifts.
  • Develops and maintains a current database of major gift prospects while executing strategies to ensure that newly identified prospects are contacted in a timely manner.
  • Drafts and customizes correspondence, proposals, and other written materials for assigned prospects.
  • Communicates progress toward development goals with the School Dean and the Director, Academic Development.
  • Provides leadership and support for volunteers.       
  • Encourages qualified prospects to consider the benefits of including JSU in their estate plans.
  • Monitors a timely system of gift acknowledgment, including the mailing of receipts, the advising of appropriate University officials, and reporting to donors for memorials and similar projects.
  • Inputs pertinent information into the donor database in a timely manner. Travels nationally as well as attends evening and weekend activities.
  • Serves on committees as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in marketing, public relations, communications or a related field, and
  • At least three (3) years’ experience in fundraising, may include individual solicitation for campaigns, non-profits, or foundations, or
  • Experience in high-end sales, marketing, public relations, higher education admissions, or financial planning
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required. (Travel reimbursement at state rates.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of a donor database or customer relationship management software
