Job Summary:

Jacksonville State University invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor beginning Fall 2020 in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration.

This position will be responsible for teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in Public Administration, with the ability to teach online MPA courses as needed.   Teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in research methods, typically qualitative and basic quantitative methods is essential.  Subfields of interest include state-level bureaucracy and regional economic development.  Meaningful experience with local or state economic development organizations or planning entities is a strong plus.

This position will also be responsible for teaching in the field of American government, with specializations open and potentially customizable.  Beneficial areas of knowledge may include elections & voter behavior, political parties, early American federalism, American constitutional development, jurisprudence in the pre-Warren court era, and historical Western religious thought and politics.

This position may teach, if prepared, undergraduate political science courses in the field of global politics.  Attractive areas of preparation include Latin America, U.S.-Mexico relations, American foreign policy, and global trade relations. Knowledge of European populist politics is a plus, including controversies about nation-based cultural diversity vs. European multicultural uniformity.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

The ideal candidate will be innovative with a strong interest in teaching through active learning pedagogy. The successful candidate will demonstrate aptitude and inclination for engaging students in research, both through individual mentored research as well as course-embedded undergraduate research experiences. Teaching and mentoring masters-level graduate students is also expected. The applicant must demonstrate the ability to advise students on future careers and have a working knowledge of curriculum requirements, as well as assessment and educational trends in higher education. A record of grant writing experience for extramural funding is beneficial. Additional requirements include skillful and effective use of English (both oral and written), basic computer skills, and the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with professional organizations within their field of expertise outside of JSU.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for teaching graduate and undergraduate level courses in Political Science and Public Administration, with competency in data analysis as relevant to courses taught and field of research inquiry.
  •  Belongs to educational and professional associations as is advantageous, and participates in these organizations, especially within concentration fields. 
  •  Develops and implements programs of instruction that are responsive to student interests and needs, with attention to university policies, accreditation standards, and state curriculum guides.
  •  Serves on departmental and university committees in accordance to departmental needs and available opportunities.
  •  Responsible for curriculum and program development, advisement, professional development activities, and grant writing within the political science and public administration area.
  •  Assesses student’s abilities as related to desired educational goals and objectives, in order to maximize student achievement.
  •  Manages the behaviors of learners in the classroom and participates in the management of student behavior in other parts of the campus, in order to provide a general environment conducive to the learning process. 
  •  Communicates continually to students (either in writing or verbally) in regards to instructional expectations, student progress or lack of progress.
  •  Responsible for recoding students’ attendance and keeps attendance registers, according to JSU policy.
  •  Actively participates in and works with university personnel in planning effective instructional goals, objectives, methods and curriculum. 
  •  Exhibits a commitment and ability to conduct scholarly activities and engage in professional, university, and community service.
  •  Participates in professional growth and development activities including staff meetings, and in-service and staff development activities as required or assigned.
  •  Assists in the documentation of student progress by efficiently maintaining and submitting appropriate records and reports.
  •  Ensures that the classroom or instructional environment is healthful and safe and generally conducive to learning. 
  •  Agrees to participate in extra-curricular activities as requested by the head of the department or Dean of the school. 
  •  Performs other duties as assigned by the department head.  Works to help build departmental enrollments through quality teaching, collegial interactions with faculty and students, service that makes a difference for the public good, and research conductive to building student interest in the program.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in a field specific to discipline to be taught with a MPA degree preferred
  • ability to teach online MPA courses as needed
