Job Summary:

The Student Athlete Development Specialist provides comprehensive general mental health services to student athletes at Jacksonville State University in coordination with Counseling Services, the Student Athlete Development & Support Center and the Athletic Department.  This includes mental health screenings and assessment, therapeutic interventions, case management, training and education.  The Student Athlete Development Specialist provides strong advocacy skills and promotes lifetime wellness.

Essential Functions:

  • Serves as a mental health clinician, providing individual, couples and group therapy services.
  •  Provides on-call emergency services as assigned.
  •  Provides critical incident debriefing for student athletes.
  •  Partners with Counseling Services and the Student Athlete Development & Support Center to facilitate annual mental health screenings for all student athletes.
  •  Reviews results of mental health assessments and provides follow-up to student athletes with elevated screening results.
  •  Promotes mental health and wellness through consultation, collaboration, training and education for student athletes, the Department of Athletics and greater JSU community to include faculty and student facing service providers. 
  • May conduct pre-op and post-op consultation and counseling for students who are preparing for and/or recovering from surgery.
  • Collaborates and coordinates care with health specific personnel, including sports physicians, athletic trainers and nutritionists to promote and support holistic wellbeing.
  • Identifies and establishes relationships with mental health providers in the community to deliver a full continuum of care.
  • Provides educational programs regarding mental health and mental wellness, identifying signs of mental illness, and how to make appropriate referrals for therapy/counseling.
  • Works collaboratively with university compliance personnel and coaches to ensure adherence to all NCAA rules and regulations regarding support services for student athletes.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary team meetings with athletic staff including sports medicine, coaching, academic support, counseling etc.
  • Provides linkage to campus and community resources as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Social Work
  • LMSW or LICSW licensure, if not licensed in AL, must obtain licensure within one year of employment
