$25,147.20--$31,004.00 (Commensurate with experience)

Job Summary:

Under general supervision, the Communications Officer is responsible for processing and prioritizing emergency and non-emergency calls from the JSU community and general public, and for disseminating information to the appropriate public safety personnel.  The Communications Officer acts as the communications hub for the entire campus and must be able to quickly assess the situation and dispatch appropriate personnel.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Receives and transmits routine and emergency radio messages and telephone calls from the University community, including the general public.  
  • Dispatches officers and other emergency response personnel as appropriate, and maintains computer log of all activities.
  • Maintains all communication with public safety personnel working in the field via in-person, telephone, and multi-frequency radio communication, including receiving from and transmitting communication to authorized units.
  • Monitors and acknowledges various alarm systems throughout campus.
  • Assists in operation of University Camera System when needed.
  • Serves as a liaison between the public and other University departments.
  • Receives, processes, and sends teletypes. Enters data into the Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center (ACJIC) and the National Crime Information Center (NCIC).
  • Operates Telecommunication Device for the Deaf (TDD).
  • Maintains appropriate records and files pertaining to the University Police Department’s Communication Center operations.
  • Complies with all departmental and university rules, regulations and standard operating procedures.
  • Upholds high level of confidentiality.
  • Provides information services for students, visitors, faculty and staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent,
  • At least 19 years of age, and
  • Not have been convicted of a felony or crime of moral turpitude

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in emergency communications; 911 or police dispatching.
