Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic support program that targets historically difficult courses. SI sessions are regularly scheduled, out-of-class review sessions for all students enrolled in a targeted course. The sessions are informal seminars in which students review notes, discuss readings, develop organizational tools, and prepare for examinations. Students learn how to integrate course content with reasoning and study skills.
SI sessions are conducted by a student leader who has successfully completed the course, attends the course, and works with the professor to design collaborative learning sessions for the students to attend on a voluntary basis. SI leaders support classroom instruction in every way. Likewise, the SI program is offered only in classes where the faculty member understands and supports Supplemental Instruction.
Primary Responsibilities:
1. Attend the targeted class, take notes, and act as a model student.
2. Ascertain course requirements and maintain contact throughout the term with the course professor.
3. Actively recruit participants for SI sessions.
4. Conduct (3) 50-minute weekly sessions for each of your assigned section throughout the term.
5. Be prepared and be on time for each SI session.
6. Be familiar with campus resources available to students.
7. Plan SI sessions using a wide variety of the interactive learning strategies (without re-teaching, lecturing or completing students’ assignments for them).
8. Prepare handouts, informal quizzes, and other learning aids for SI sessions.

This position assists students in improving academic achievement, supports students by reviewing and clarifying learning problems, and provides useful study skills to students who need supplemental help. Additionally, peer tutors provide subject-area knowledge and serve as a model for students in the techniques, strategies, attitudes, and beliefs that successful learners employ as they acquire new knowledge, solve problems, and complete academic tasks. Tutors may also provide drop-in tutoring assistance to students based on requests for academic assistance.

Other assistance might include reviewing class material and discussing the text and course content.

The duties of a front desk assistant in the Student Success Center (SSC) are to provide excellent customer service to students, faculty, and staff, direct students to the appropriate tutor or staff member in the SSC, ensure that students are checked in/out of JSU Navigate, and to assist with monitoring the SSC 2nd floor. Front desk assistants must have strong communication skills and should be able to multitask in a fast-paced environment. Understanding and compliance of FERPA is mandatory.
Front desk assistants must be available for all mandatory training sessions, meetings, and workshops. They must be flexible and available to work outside of their class schedules, they must be dependable, and they must be punctual for their shifts. All SSC front desk assistants are expected to work well with their peers in an academic environment, and they must be willing to work with a diverse population. Knowledge of the SSC, academic support, tutoring, student resources, and other campus service departments is expected.

This position assists students in improving academic achievement, supports students by reviewing and clarifying learning problems, and provides useful study skills to students who need supplemental help. Additionally, peer tutors provide subject-area knowledge and serve as a model for students in the techniques, strategies, attitudes, and beliefs that successful learners employ as they acquire new knowledge, solve problems, and complete academic tasks. Tutors may also provide drop-in tutoring assistance to students based on requests for academic assistance.
Tutors must possess knowledge of subject area material beyond a basic level; have excellent communication skills; the ability to provide an active learning experience for students by explaining difficult concepts and providing examples for explorations. Other assistance might include reviewing class material and discussing the text and course content.

University Student Assistant - SSC 2nd Floor Front Desk Assistant (Fall 2025 - Spring 2026)

The duties of a front desk assistant in the Student Success Center (SSC) are to provide excellent customer service to students, faculty, and staff, direct students to the appropriate tutor or staff member in the SSC, ensure that students are checked in/out of JSU Navigate, and to assist with monitoring the SSC 2nd floor. Front desk assistants must have strong communication skills and should be able to multitask in a fast-paced environment. Understanding and compliance of FERPA is mandatory.
Front desk assistants must be available for all mandatory training sessions, meetings, and workshops. They must be flexible and available to work outside of their class schedules, they must be dependable, and they must be punctual for their shifts. All SSC front desk assistants are expected to work well with their peers in an academic environment, and they must be willing to work with a diverse population. Knowledge of the SSC, academic support, tutoring, student resources, and other campus service departments is expected.

Graduate Teaching Assistant - Mathematical, Computing, and Information Sciences, Mathematics (Fall 2025 - Spring 2026)

A Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) in the Mathematical, Computing, and Informational Sciences – Mathematics department assists faculty by teaching lower-level courses or labs; developing teaching materials; and preparing and grading examinations, papers, or other student work. The GTAs must be assigned to and responsible for teaching a credit bearing course and will be under the supervision of a faculty member experienced in the teaching field. A GTA’s work with students will be closely supervised and must provide opportunities to gain teaching skills and a better grasp of the academic discipline. The supervising faculty member is responsible for overseeing the assignment of all grades to students in the courses.
