$40,000.00 - $44,000.00 commensurate with experience

Normal Work Schedule:

Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., some evenings and weekends may be required

Job Summary:

As part of a strategic effort to support undergraduate students, this position will have a holistic role primarily of academic advising with collaboration to support career development and student success. As a primary role academic advisor, this position assists students with course registration, academic strategies, and major and minor selection. To support career development, this position incorporates career exploration and development within the academic advising process, connects students to resources for internships and co-ops, and assists students with developing post-graduation plans, including career and further education. In support of student success, this position assists high support students with resources to identify learning style preferences and troubleshoot academic problems. This position also monitors academic progress and standing, connects students with resources on campus and in the community, advises on university policies and procedures, provides scaffolding opportunities for students to develop self-motivation and self-regulation, and ensures persistence and retention. This position works within a collaborative College Advisement Team that includes career development, the employees in this position report to the Senior Advisor for the college in which assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides consultation, guidance, and advising to students within an academic school/college regarding academic plans and strategies; maintains appropriate records regarding student consultations.
  • Provides success coaching to selected cohorts of students with high support need indicators.
  • Ensures students in the college have access to robust career development opportunities.
  • Connects students to resources and services across the institution in support of individual student success and in partnership with student success personnel.
  • Processes, verifies, and/or approves academic paperwork and records; updates academic records, reviews external documents, supports certification of graduation, evaluates transfer work, and processes academic exceptions to curriculum requirements.
  • Monitors student progress to degree attainment and conducts degree checks to ensure compliance with degree program requirements.
  • Presents on standard academic advising topics, success coaching strategies, and career development opportunities at large and small workshops and orientations.
  • Provides input to College Advisement Team regarding the development of academic advisement, recruitment, and/or curricular programs offered by the school/college; may research information, compile statistics, and gather and compute various data, as needed.
  • Participates in training and collaborates with College Advisement Team to advance academic and career development for all students.
  • Ensures full adoption of JSU Navigate, Degree Works, and other student success technology and increases use of JSU Navigate and Degree Works by faculty in the college citing its benefits for retention.
  • Participates in NACADA, including advising community involvement and on campus professional development opportunities.
  • Serves on university committees, as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Academic Advisor I: $40,000.00
    • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, English, Education or in degree offered by the college or related field.
  • Academic Advisor II: $44,000.00
    • Master’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, English, Education or in degree offered by the college or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, English, Education or in degree offered by the college or related field.
  • Some experience directly related to higher education.
