Federal Work Study - Theatre & Film - Costume Shop Manager (Fall 2026 - Spring 2027)

Position Summary:

Oversees the organization, maintenance, and readiness of all costume inventory and supports costume needs for departmental productions.

Knowledge of:

  • Theatrical costume terminology and wardrobe practices
  • Safe handling, storage, and care of garments and accessories
  • Inventory management and record-keeping procedures
  • Laundry and garment care techniques
  • Costume shop safety standards
  • Machines & Equipment
  • Sewing machines and basic costume shop tools
  • Laundry equipment (washer, dryer, irons, steamers)
  • Standard office equipment (computer, copier)

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Work independently with minimal supervision
  • Lift, move, and organize costume racks, bins, and supplies
  • Track costume checkouts and returns accurately
  • Maintain a clean and orderly costume shop
  • Collaborate effectively with designers, faculty, and student crews
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Attention to detail in tracking and maintaining inventory
  • Basic hand-sewing and costume repair skills
  • Clear written and verbal communication
  • Ability to follow procedures and prioritize tasks
  • Maintain costume inventory and storage organization
  • Assist with pulling costumes for productions
  • Track costume checkouts and returns
  • Support basic costume repairs and maintenance
  • Coordinate laundry and upkeep during production runs
  • Assist with additional theatre production and facility tasks as assigned by the Technical
  • Director after primary weekly responsibilities have been completed.
  • Weekly Deliverables
  • Updated inventory and check-out log
  • Photo documentation of organized costume areas
  • List of items needing repair or replacement
  • Progress update on current production costume pulls

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in costume, wardrobe, or theatre production
  • Basic sewing or costume construction experience
  • Familiarity with theatrical production schedules

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be enrolled as a JSU student taking at least six (6) hours per fall or spring semester. (Requirements for international students below. *)
  • If not a first-time student, the applicant must have a GPA of 2.00 or higher.
  • Selected applicants must provide evidence of student enrollment and GPA (unofficial transcript or printout of enrollment/GPA from MyJaxState.
  • Must be eligible for Federal Work Study.
  • May not be a Dual Enrollment Student.
