Federal Work Study - Theatre & Film - Scene Shop Manager (Fall 2026 - Spring 2027)

Position Summary:

Supports the construction, organization, and safety of scenic builds for theatre productions.

**Must be eligible for Federal Work Study. If uncertain of eligibility, please contact the Office of Financial Aid. 

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the scene shop
  • Assist with scenic construction and painting
  • Monitor tool usage and safety compliance
  • Track build progress
  • Assist with additional theatre production and facility tasks as assigned by the Technical Director after primary weekly responsibilities have been completed.
  • Weekly Deliverables:
    • Weekly build progress report
    • Shop organization checklist (completed and documented)
    • Materials and tools inventory update
    • Safety check confirmation
  • Basic scenic construction methods and materials
  • Safe operation of hand and power tools
  • Theatre production build processes
  • Shop organization and storage practices
  • Workplace safety standards Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to follow technical drawings and instructions
  • Basic carpentry, painting, and fabrication skills
  • Attention to detail and safety awareness
  • Clear verbal and written communication
  • Work independently or as part of a build crew
  • Lift, carry, and move materials and scenery safely
  • Monitor tool usage and enforce safety practices
  • Maintain a clean and organized scene shop
  • Track and report build progress

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior scenic or shop experience
  • Basic carpentry or painting background
  • Familiarity with theatre production environments

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Reliable weekly availability
  • Responsible handling of tools and equipment
  • Applicants must be enrolled as a JSU student taking at least six (6) hours per fall or spring semester. (Requirements for international students below. *)
  • If not a first-time student, the applicant must have a GPA of 2.00 or higher.
  • Selected applicants must provide evidence of student enrollment and GPA (unofficial transcript or printout of enrollment/GPA from MyJaxState.
  • Must be eligible for Federal Work Study.
  • May not be a Dual Enrollment Student.

Machines & Equipment

  • Hand and power tools used in scenic construction
  • Scene shop equipment and workbenches
  • Standard office equipment (computer, copier)
