$32,307.04 - $33,529.60 commensurate with experience

Job Summary:

The HVAC Mechanic II works at the journeyman level to perform service and maintenance on various refrigeration and air conditioning installations and equipment.  Tasks are completed according to established trade practices under the direction of a senior level HVAC mechanic or the HVAC supervisor, and is reviewed for compliance with instructions and adequate completion.  The HVAC Mechanic II works rotating shifts; special situations or emergencies may necessitate reporting on a scheduled off-day.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Installs and maintains air conditioning units and adjusts temperature controls in window units, reciprocating units, centrifugal units, ice machines, freezers, and refrigerators.
  • Maintains and repairs heating units such as heat pumps, gas furnaces, steam converters, gas boilers, and gas water heaters.
  • Lubricates fan compressor motors; adjusts automatic valves and controls, condenser and evaporator; replaces belts, pulleys, fly wheels and fuses; checks for refrigerant leaks and replaces refrigerant as needed.
  • Installs and maintains pumps used to transfer fluid to heating or cooling such as water or Freon.
  • Removes, disassembles, repairs, rebuilds, and installs motors or pumps used in heating or cooling units.
  • Performs basic and general maintenance and repair such as pipefitting, welding, and electrical restoration.
  • Drives university trucks and vans.
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Possesses manual dexterity to manipulate small hand tools; visual acuity sufficient to read gauges and thermometers and inspect small parts; hearing sufficient to distinguish proper functioning of units and to diagnose problems.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Any combination of training and experience equivalent to: Graduation from high school or completion of the GED and completion of a vocational school program in refrigeration and extensive experience in refrigeration and heating maintenance and repair.
  • Valid Alabama driver’s license
  • Must successfully pass a Motor Vehicle Report (MVR)
  • Possession, at the time of hire, of a universal refrigerant transition and recovery certification issued by EPA

Public Safety Support

The Public Safety Support position is a non-sworn position responsible for enforcing university parking rules and regulations, maintaining public safety equipment operated by the Department of Public Safety, and providing additional logistical, safety and security responsibilities as called upon. Work includes the protection of life and property through the enforcing of university regulations and all aspects of the parking system.  Support includes manual and clerical tasks to assist the unit supervisor, coordination and mentor part-time student officers, traffic direction and control, as well as logistical operations to support the University's Division of Health and Public Safety.  Limited protective work in the guarding and securing of buildings, grounds, and facilities against loss or damage; monitoring and inspecting buildings and grounds for safety and security procedure, regulations, and enforcement will be required. This position will assist other university police and public safety officers upon request.  Work will involve the use of independent judgement in responding to emergencies, transporting and using support equipment, as well as working in storm shelters during weather emergencies. Work is frequently performed outdoors in all weather conditions. Employee will generally work day shifts, but may be assigned an evening shift during special events and special sporting events, or may be called to work odd hours for special events or activities on campus. Work is performed under general supervision of the Public Safety Services Supervisor and in accordance with established routine and guidelines checked by personal inspections, review of reports, and discussions with the unit supervisor.
