The Department of Communication invites applications for the position of Instructor in Communication, specializing in broadcast production and broadcast journalism. This non-tenure track position carries a 4/4 teaching load and 9 months of full-time service.
The program is industry-focused and student-centered. We are looking for someone who has spent significant time in the field telling stories across platforms (broadcast newsrooms, multimedia production houses, digital news startups, or sports media operations) and wants to bring that expertise into the classroom.
We balance hands-on skills with an integrated approach to broadcast production in journalism and other forms of content creation. Special consideration will be given to those who can teach creative and experiential courses in broadcast news and media production. The ideal candidate will maintain professional currency and collaborate with program faculty to ensure alignment between professional practice and academic foundations.
This position requires the following qualifications:
- All applicants must have a master’s degree in mass communication, journalism, media production or a related field
- 3-5 years of industry experience in broadcast journalism, journalism, multimedia production, media operations and/or news production.
The department will give priority to applicants who have:
- Evidence of quality prior teaching at the undergraduate level.
- Philosophical commitment to digital, technological, and disciplinary integration.
- Background to bridge our digital journalism and digital media production curricula and help students develop industry-ready skills.
The position has an anticipated start date of August 1, 2027.
The Department of Communication earned full accreditation from the Accrediting Council for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication in April of 2023. We strive to offer a high-impact, industry-current approach to teaching. Our approach helps builds a strong reputation for producing job-ready graduates who are well-rounded citizens. Courses are offered through various delivery formats including face-to-face, hybrid/blended, and 100% on-line. JSU also serves a robust population of nontraditional and first-generation learners. Quality teaching will be the successful candidate’s primary responsibility balanced with creative production aligned with the position, as well as service to the department supporting our student media and contributing to the ongoing development and innovation in our curriculum.
