Job Summary:

The Police Investigator reports to the Investigations Captain and is responsible for facilitating a wide range of aspects of public safety, including supervising crime scenes, misdemeanor and felony cases, ensuring compliance with department policies and procedures; investigative aspects of the police department. This position may be assigned to day or evening shifts and may be called to work odd hours for special events or activities on campus and answering routine calls for service. Work may frequently be performed outdoors in all weather conditions. This job has the same responsibility as patrol officer with the added responsibility as the aforementioned responsibilities as an investigator.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Responsible for supervising and responding to crime scenes, misdemeanor and felony cases, and ensures compliance with department policies and procedures; receives and reviews reports for accuracy and content.
• Have ability to interview and interrogate victims, suspects, and witnesses while investigating crimes and incidents.
• Supervises and/or assists employees, by providing investigatory guidance and other police work in accordance with state laws, local ordinances, and university policies.
• Be able to properly gather and seize evidence following proper chain of custody procedures and testifying in court
• Direct police personnel in criminal investigations
• Represents the Department at campus wide and other public events as directed
• May be required to send out emergency alert messages warning the campus and surrounding areas of an imminent threat while on-scene during an active threat.
• Serves on the University’s Behavior Concerns Committee as assigned and works with mental health professionals, as needed
• Serves in training police officers, students, faculty, staff and contract employees on how to respond to incidents, and as specialized instructor within the department
• Attends and testifies in municipal, circuit, district, federal, juvenile court, grand jury, and other court proceedings or hearings. Work with other law enforcement and judicial agencies to coordinate investigations and criminal prosecution
• Serves as department liaison to coordinate closely with Title IX, Community Standards and Ethics, and serves on the University's Sexual Assault Response Team (SART).  
• Assists other law enforcement agencies if mutual aid is requested or needed
• Completes police various daily reports documents such as daily roll call reports, vehicle impound forms, traffic accident reports, warning reports, uniform traffic citations, permission to search forms, advise of rights forms, incident/offense reports, arrest reports, bond forms, complaint forms, fingerprint cards, leave and training request forms, employee evaluations, property and evidence forms and other UPD required documentation.
• Participates in training activities, including classroom, seminar or field training. Assist with department's accreditation requirements
• Supervise the receiving of evidence and property and manage the agency's property/evidence room; coordinate lost and found.
• Be able to respond to calls when prompted by phone calls received by UPD Communication Center, through alarms, citizens’ requests, or by the officer’s observations. Responds as needed to investigate crimes against person and property with little notice
• Works with all other university departments as needed.  
• Become familiar with and assist with the University's camera systems. 
• Performs other duties as assigned

Required Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED,
• Must be certified or eligible to be certified by the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission within appointment
• A valid Alabama driver’s license at time of appointment
• No felony conviction or convictions for crimes of moral turpitude
• Must be able to qualify with approved firearm as required by department policy and APOSTC standards
• Will be required to work an on-call rotating schedule

Preferred Qualifications:

• Minimum three years of sworn law enforcement experience, preferably from a university or college police department
