$12.00 per hour up to 15 hours per week (Max 26 hours per week)

Position Summary: 

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic support program that targets historically difficult courses. SI sessions are regularly scheduled, out-of-class review sessions for all students enrolled in a targeted course. The sessions are informal seminars in which students review notes, discuss readings, develop organizational tools, and prepare for examinations. Students learn how to integrate course content with reasoning and study skills.

SI sessions are conducted by a student leader who has successfully completed the course, attends the course, and works with the professor to design collaborative learning sessions for the students to attend on a voluntary basis. SI leaders support classroom instruction in every way. Likewise, the SI program is offered only in classes where the faculty member understands and supports Supplemental Instruction.

Positions may be filled based on individual applicants’ skills, qualifications, and departmental needs.

Adheres to all department and University policies and procedures.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Attend the targeted class, take notes, and act as a model student.
  • Ascertain course requirements and maintain contact throughout the term with the course professor.
  • Actively recruit participants for SI sessions.
  • Conduct (3) 50-minute weekly sessions for each of your assigned sections throughout the term.
  • Be prepared and be on time for each SI session.
  • Be familiar with campus resources available to students.
  • Plan SI sessions using a wide variety of the interactive learning strategies (without re-teaching, lecturing, or completing students’ assignments for them).
  • Prepare handouts, informal quizzes, and other learning aids for SI sessions.
  • Maintain a professional attitude at all times.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Applicants must be enrolled as a JSU student taking at least three (3) hours per fall or spring semester. (Requirements for international students below. *)
  • Must have completed at least one semester of full-time attendance at JSU and have a GPA of 3.00 or higher.
  • Must have earned an A or B in all courses you wish to tutor.
  • Have a faculty recommendation letter.
  • Selected applicants must provide evidence of student enrollment and GPA (unofficial transcript or printout of enrollment/GPA from MyJSU.

Notice Regarding International Students:

  • All international students must be in a valid immigration status.
  • Due to Visa requirements international students must be enrolled as a full-time JSU student and possess each of the following:
  1. Passport from their respective country.
  2. F-1 Student Visa or J-1 Exchange Student Visa.
  3. U.S. Customs Form I-94.
  4. Official photo identification.
  5. Official Social Security Card imprinted with “Valid for Work Only” or similar statement

Assistant Professor of English (20th Century American Literature)

We invite applications for an Assistant Professor of English in 20th-Century and Contemporary American Literature, a fulltime, tenure-track position to begin August 2027. This faculty member will be responsible for teaching American literature from the beginning of the 20th Century to the contemporary period, according to department practice and policy; conducting scholarly/creative research sufficient for tenure and advancement; and engaging in appropriate service. A Ph.D. in English with a specialization in 20th-Century American Literature by the appointment date is required. The ability to teach composition and evidence of excellent teaching and scholarly potential are also required. Preference may be given to candidates with a subspecialty in Native American, Asian American, Latinx, and/or other minority literature(s).

Assistant Professor of English, (Rhetoric & Composition Studies)
