Visiting Instructor

Job Summary

The Department of English seeks to hire non-tenure track Visiting Instructor for the 2026-2027 academic year.  The Visiting Faculty member will teach a 5/4 load of composition, writing studios, speech, and/or literature surveys, as well as other courses needed by the department, and will conduct weekly office hours.  Applicants with experience teaching composition, developmental writing, speech, and literature surveys may be given priority.  Applicants with availability to teach in person on the JSU campus Monday-Thursday between the hours of 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Fridays 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. will be given priority. 

Applicants must have a minimum of a master’s degree with at least 18 hours completed in graduate-level English courses.  Applicants with master’s or doctoral degrees in English will be given priority.  The position start date is August 3, 2026, and Visiting Faculty will be required to attend an all-day professional development departmental workshop.

All applicants must submit a CV and cover letter.  The cover letter must address the applicant’s availability to teach in person on the JSU campus Monday-Thursday between the hours of 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Fridays 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  New applicants who have not taught English at JSU before must also submit three references with current email and phone numbers and official transcripts. 

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a field appropriate to the discipline with at least 18 hours completed in graduate-level English courses.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s or doctoral degree in English.
  • Experience with in-person, hybrid, and/or online instruction.
  • Experience with Canvas or another learning management system.
  • Experience mentoring students.
  • Experience working with culturally diverse populations.
