Essential Functions:

Serve the Jazz Studies Program under the direction of the Jazz Director. Serve the David L. Walters Dept. of Music under the direction of the Percussion Director. Speaks and listens to others, both in person and over the telephone, and be able to direct ensemble rehearsals.

Graduate Administrative Assistants are expected to work 20 hours per week. In return, Graduate Administrative Assistants will receive $2,080 per fall or spring semester, which will be disbursed in four payments. The Graduate Administrative Assistant will also be awarded a fellowship of six to nine hours of graduate coursework and a waiver of the general university fees.

Graduate Assistantship Program Qualifications:

1)      Must possess appropriate undergraduate degree in Music from a regionally accredited institution.

2)      Applicant must possess requisite musical performance skills and knowledge of jazz style to function as jazz performer and director. Experience as arranger is a plus.

3)      Minimum of 3.0 college GPA required.

4)      Applicants must be enrolled in a JSU graduate program taking six to nine graduate semester hours of coursework.

a.       Exception 1: If a student is classified as a graduate student and is required to take undergraduate/foundation courses for their program, a minimum of nine undergraduate hours or a minimum of six undergraduate hours plus three graduate hours must be taken.

b.      Exception 2: If a student has made satisfactory progress toward obtaining the graduate degree and needs fewer than six graduate hours to complete the degree, the student may be considered for an assistantship.

5)      Have a faculty recommendation.

6)      Must have completed at least one semester of full-time attendance to JSU.

7)      Applicants must attach under “Transcript” an unofficial copy of their student transcript as evidence of student enrollment and GPA.

8)      Must maintain the required GPA for the program.

·         Due to Visa requirements international students must be enrolled as a full-time JSU student and possess each of the following:

e.       Official Social Security Card imprinted with “Valid for Work Only” or similar statement.

Preferred Qualifications:

·         Preference will be given in consideration of applicant’s grade point average in music as well as overall grade point average.

·         Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated relevant administrative and computer skills appropriate to music.

·         Preference will be given to applicants who have experience in the kinds of duties required for this position.
