Job Summary:

The Creative Media Specialist/Designer works with faculty and other associates to design, develop, evaluate, and revise instruction and instructional materials predominately for online and hybrid classes.  Special emphasis on multimedia guidance and development.  Responsible for official video platform of the University (Kaltura) and other media tools, and for helping users leverage the web conferencing tools selected by the University (Teams, etc.).  There is greater emphasis and focus on knowledge and skills associated with multimedia and the use of various media in online and hybrid courses.  Responsible for media resources such as our Vodcast Studio and other capture, streaming, and media resources.  Responsibility for guiding/teaching faculty in the development and appropriate incorporation of rich media into courses based on industry best practices and principles, and hands on development of some of those elements. Collaboration with other staff and offices for the development of promotional materials, including content for e-signage, social media, web site, and other forms of distribution.  Collaboration with other staff in the development and distribution of training materials, especially involving the use of media.  Offers guidance and assistance to faculty regarding accessibility compliance of rich media elements.  Development of interactive learning modules using special software provided by JSU.  This position is strong in both instructional design/technology, and in the fields of multimedia and communication.

Essential Functions:

  • Consults with faculty and staff on design, development, and evaluation of instructional programs, materials, media usage, methods, student support systems, and teaching and assessment techniques, and on the construction of evaluation programs and studies to promote effective teaching and learning through formative and summative evaluation procedures, data sources, and instruments.
  •  Edits faculty writing and, in some cases, drafts instructional content based on a variety of inputs
  •  Leads or co-leads workshops designed to inform faculty about online learning, instructional design, technology integration, and related topics
  •  Manages and tracks the progress of multiple instructional design projects, adheres to production schedules, and keeps projects within budget, resources, and time parameters
  •  Produces faculty-development activities including training and innovations updates, selection and construction of materials, and instructional uses of new technologies
  •  Creates media for various educational, training, and promotional purposes.
  •  Recommends, configures, and uses media hardware/software systems and components.
  •  Produces faculty-development activities including training and innovations updates, selection and construction of materials, and instructional uses of new technologies.
  •  Conducts applied research and evaluation, interprets data, and recommends procedures and solutions to integrate technology for effective learning and instruction.
  •  Researches, evaluates, and develops applications of new technologies, materials, and techniques for their applicability to educational uses.
  •  Makes and maintains training materials (print, web, media) for faculty and students on the current learning management system(s), including, but not limited to, Canvas.
  •  Advances the University’s online education systems by working cooperatively and collaboratively within the department and with other University units.
  •  Establishes and/or works with learning management system user groups in academic departments and facilitates special events geared towards highlighting the use of current educational technology.
  •  With supervisory oversight, develops and maintains sections of the Office’s website that are related to instructional design and delivery.
  •  Actively participates in higher education, distance education, and educational technology professional groups, and attends professional development opportunities.
  •  Performs other duties as assigned by leadership. 

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree with some combination of concentrations in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Communication or similar fields.  Concentrations can be from Bachelor’s or Master’s level as long as at least one component is at the Master’s level.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in the field of media production, communication, instructional technology, or similar field, preferably in a higher education setting.
