Essential Functions:

The duties of the University Student Aid is to obtain work experience on campus in offices, labs, gym, the library, and other areas. Duties may include assisting staff and faculty with preparation for research, classroom instruction, departmental operational needs, or performing administrative and other support duties as required. Positions may be filled based on individual applicants’ skills, qualification and departmental needs.  Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) is an academic support program that targets historically difficult courses. PASS sessions are regularly scheduled, out-of-class review sessions for all students enrolled in a targeted course. The sessions are informal seminars in which students review notes, discuss readings, develop organizational tools, and prepare for examinations. Students learn how to integrate course content with reasoning and study skills.

PASS sessions are conducted by a student leader who has successfully completed the course, attends the course, and works with the professor to design collaborative learning sessions for the students to attend on a voluntary basis. PASS leaders support classroom instruction in every way. Likewise, the PASS program is offered only in classes where the faculty member understands and supports Peer Assisted Study Sessions.

Primary Responsibilities:

1. Attend the targeted class, take notes, and act as a model student.

2. Ascertain course requirements and maintain contact throughout the term with the course professor.

3. Actively recruit participants for PASS sessions.

4. Conduct (3) 50-minute weekly sessions for each of your assigned section throughout the term.

5. Be prepared and be on time for each PASS session.

6. Be familiar with campus resources available to students.

7. Plan PASS sessions using a wide variety of the interactive learning strategies (without re-teaching, lecturing or completing students’ assignments for them).

8. Prepare handouts, informal quizzes, and other learning aids for PASS sessions.

9. Maintain a professional attitude at all times.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3.0 college GPA required.
  • Must have earned an A or B in all courses you wish to tutor.
  • Have a faculty recommendation.
  • Must have completed at least one semester of full-time attendance to JSU.
  • Applicants must attach under “Transcript” an unofficial copy of their student transcript as evidence of student enrollment and GPA.
  • Enrolled as a JSU student taking at least three (3) hours per fall or spring semester

    • Due to Visa requirements international students must be enrolled as a full-time JSU student and possess each of the following:

  5. Official Social Security Card imprinted with “Valid for Work Only” or similar statement.
