Job Summary:

This is a professional position in the development, implementation and administration of science-based environmental educational and conservation programs through the JSU Environmental Policy and Information Center and Field Schools. All activities are through primary coordination with Director as well as through additional coordination with partners including agencies, schools, groups and individuals. Incumbent will use independent judgment and discretion in program development and departmental administration. Work is periodically reviewed for adherence to department/division goals and effectiveness of results.

Note: Position base is Canyon Center in Fort Payne, Alabama.

Essential Functions:

  • Researches and develops curriculum, program parameters, program details, and related activities.
  • Oversees educational program development and scheduling at the EPIC office, Little River Canyon Center and the Talladega Mountains Natural Resource Center as well as programs associated with the JSU Frog Pond, Planetarium, Observatory, Nature Camps, and other Field School activities.
  • Coordinates educational activities associated with NASA, Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service, Alabama State Parks and other JSU partners as assigned.
  • Presents day, night, and weekend programs, after school activities, workshops and summer campus designed to meet the needs of a variety of age groups and interest levels.
  • Oversees staff in the coordination with NASA and In-Service Education in the creation of teacher workshops.
  • Walks and talks for a distance of up to three miles with customer groups.
  • Keeps records for all programs offered documenting training conducted and other data to document activities and productivity.
  • Trains volunteers and staff to assist in program delivery.
  • Trains teachers on the course evaluation process.
  • Markets the program within the region.
  • Analyzes complex documents and writes reports.
  • Prepares reports related to Field Schools, Little River Canyon Center, the Talladega Mountains Natural Resource Center and others as assigned.
  • Develops a cadre of volunteers to support current and future training.
  • Acts as Field School Director in the absence of the Director.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Science background required.
  • Three years of classroom teaching or informal science education experience required.
  • Interest in outdoor educational activity required.
  • Extensive public speaking experience required.
  • Must be able to work nights and weekends as programs required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
  • Master's degree in related field
