Assistant Professor, Political Science
Job Summary
The Department of Sociology and Political Science invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Political Science. This is a full-time, tenure-track position with a primary teaching focus.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses in comparative politics and international relations. The position will also require teaching a section of American government. The development of courses in areas of interest to the candidate is possible. The teaching load is four courses per semester.
The successful candidate will engage in mentoring, service, and scholarship. Responsible for teaching undergraduate level courses in Political Science with competency in comparative politics and international relations. Belongs to educational and professional associations as is advantageous, and participates in these organizations, especially within concentration fields. Develops and implements programs of instruction that are responsive to student interests and needs, with attention to university policies and state curriculum guides. Serves on departmental and university committees in accordance with departmental needs and available opportunities. Responsible for curriculum and program development, advisement, and professional development activities within the political science area. Assesses student’s abilities as related to desired educational goals and objectives, in order to maximize student achievement. Manages the behaviors of learners in the classroom and participates in the management of student behavior in other parts of the campus, in order to provide a general environment conducive to the learning process. Communicates continually to students (either in writing or verbally) in regard to instructional expectations, student progress or lack of progress.
Responsible for recording students’ attendance and keeps attendance registers, according to JSU policy. Actively participates in and works with university personnel in planning effective instructional goals, objectives, methods and curriculum. Exhibits a commitment and ability to conduct scholarly activities and engage in professional, university, and community service. Participates in professional growth and development activities including staff meetings, and in-service and staff development activities as required or assigned. Assists in the documentation of student progress by efficiently maintaining and submitting appropriate records and reports. Ensures that the classroom or instructional environment is healthful and safe and generally conducive to learning. Agrees to participate in extra-curricular activities as requested by the head of the department or Dean of the school. Performs other duties as assigned by the department head.
Works to help build departmental enrollments through quality teaching, collegial interactions with faculty and students, service that makes a difference for the public good, and research conductive to building student interest in the program.
Job Requirements
Requires a Ph.D. in Political Science, International Relations, Government, or a closely related field.
Salary: $57,460.00 - $71,666.00 per year.
