Applications are sought for the position of Head of the Department of Applied Engineering (AE) within the College of Business and Industry (CBI) at Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama.

Candidates for the position must have earned a doctorate in industrial engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, occupational safety, or a closely related field; a solid record of scholarly research and publications; work experience in the manufacturing environment; a commitment to excellence in teaching; the ability to recruit and mentor a diverse group of talent; demonstrated success with programmatic accreditation; and strong leadership and communication skills. Qualified candidates will seek a primary tenured appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor within the CBI.

The Department of Applied Engineering offers undergraduate and graduate programs in Applied Manufacturing Engineering (BS), Industrial Leadership (BS), Occupational Safety and Health Management (BS), and Manufacturing Systems Technology (MS). All programs are accredited by ATMAE – the Association of Technology, Management, and Applied Engineering. There are currently 5 faculty members in the department serving approximately 300 students. Work-based learning is a priority within the department, where all undergraduate students participate in a required senior internship. The department also administers the only co-op education program on campus. All programs boast close to 100% job placement within four months of graduation.

The department is also home to the JSU Center for Manufacturing Support (CMS), a state-funded center which serves to promote advanced manufacturing practices throughout the region and state. The CMS is an active presence in the manufacturing community, conducting applied research projects as well as training programs for industry. Three full-time engineers and several student assistants staff the CMS. The CMS is well-equipped with three state-of-the-art facilities: the Advanced Manufacturing Hub, the Additive Innovation Lab, and the Automation Hub. These facilities serve as instructional spaces for applied engineering courses, industry training, and applied research work.

This position requires the following:

  • An earned doctorate in industrial engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, occupational safety, or a closely related field.
  • A minimum of one (1) year experience in a manufacturing or a similar field.
  • A minimum of one (1) year administrative experience such as department head, assistant department, director, assistant director, program leader/coordinator, or similar responsibility.
  • The successful candidate will also have accomplishments and credentials sufficient to meet the requirements of the rank of Associate Professor or Professor at JSU in teaching, service, and scholarly publications, which includes a minimum of five years of experience in higher education.

Preference may be given to applicants with experience administrating Association of Technology, Management, and Applied Engineering (ATMAE) or Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited programs.

Applicants will be required to submit a cover letter, resume or CV, teaching philosophy and unofficial transcripts to complete their application.
