Job Summary:

The employee in this position assists the Director in the development and marketing of programs to support regional small business owners, managers, or prospective owners seeking assistance. Provides effective technical support, outreach programs and appropriate partnerships with the customers served. Serves as an advocate for small business development expansion and retention of regional small business. Uses independent judgement and initiative. Work is periodically reviewed by the supervisor for adherence to department/division goals and effectiveness of results.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists the Director in the achievement of economic impact goals as established by the Small Business Administration, the Alabama SBDC related to job creation and retention, dollar amounts of loans and investments secured, increased sales, and the number of businesses acquired or started; specific economic impact goals may differ annually.
  • Stays abreast of industry trends, current events, and customer’s needs in the regional economic environment.
  • Identifies and analyze industry or geographic trends with business strategy implications.
  • Meets with clients to determine needs and provides direct counseling and delivery of programs.
  • Maintains an appropriate level of clients as defined in the unit’s strategic goals and objectives.
  • Manages the timely flow of information to users.
  • Writes individual client write-ups or summaries required by contract, quarterly reports, and other periodic reports.
  • Inputs client data into the Alabama Small Business Administration online software program based on client write-ups.
  • Collaborates and prepares JSU Board of Trustee quarterly reports for the unit incorporating input for other SBDC staff
  • Collaborates and prepares the Alabama SBCD Network Semi-Annual Reports and the ASBCD Center Review incorporating input from other SBCD staff.
  • Prepares JSU Annual Report and inputs into PRISM.
  • Organizes and hosts workshops throughout the SBDC nine county region assigned to the University.
  • Engages in community outreach by providing speeches, presentations, committee and professional association participation, and direct discussions.
  • Keeps up-to-date technically and applies new knowledge to the job.
  • Attends and participates in departmental staff meetings by providing updates on the status of projects.
  • Maintains the JSU SBDC website, updating when changes occur and posting upcoming workshop flyers and agendas. Serves on various internal and external committees.
  • Obtains a minimum of twelve (12) hours annually of professional development credits through various formats, including: webinars, conferences, state meetings, etc.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in any field
  • Minimum of two years full time equivalent experience in business consultation, marketing, finance, management, manufacturing, technology, services, or a wholesale business required.
  • Must possess or obtain ASBDC Certified Business Counselor certification within one year of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree preferred
