Job Summary:
The Scientific Lab and Lab Safety Coordinator has highly responsible duties of an advanced scope and complexity for coordinating, planning, and organizing work for the scientific laboratories in the School. The coordinator works with a significant degree of independence, implementing and monitoring lab protocols that protect the health and safety of students and faculty. This position is receptive of the input from department faculty and the department head. Additionally assisting in the monitoring of the academic environment. The coordinator will be familiar with complex equipment and its maintenance and repair needs. The coordinator will work with a significant degree of independence, and will directly report to and will be evaluated by the department head. Additionally, this position contributes as a cross-functional employee of the University Safety Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Coordinates the instructional lab program for students to include conveying technical information to those enrolled in or teaching labs.
- Instructs students and faculty in the safe use of hazardous material ; updates faculty on their legal responsibilities in use of hazardous materials in instruction and scholarly research.
- Trains students and faculty in safety and experimental protocols for delicate and expensive instrumentation for chemistry.
- Maintains the facilities physical inventory of lab equipment, hazardous and other materials to include (but not limited to) counting, stocking, ordering, and compiling a list of frequently used supplies and equipment.
- Ensures sufficient inventory of chemicals in the lab. Arranges for purchasing of supplies for labs and arranges safe pick up from supplier. May be required to pick up supplies from supplier.
- Oversees lab environments in Martin Hall for the purpose of safety and health of students and faculty.
- Ensures high levels of safety and efficiency of lab operations and provides security of equipment.
- Monitors disposal of hazardous material in Martin Hall to ensure safety of students and faculty.
- Assists with and facilitates instruction in the laboratories.
- Works with students as they perform lab assignments and provides feedback to faculty on students’ performance.
- Sets up the laboratory for student assignments according to specifications from faculty member, i.e. prepares chemical solutions, media, cultures, etc.
- Supervises graduate teaching assistants, work study students, and students in lab practicum.
- Ensures that lab equipment is clean, safe, and in proper working order.
- Ensures that the classroom or instructional environment is healthful and safe and generally conducive to learning.
- Performs basic and routine maintenance on complex and expensive physical sciences equipment, including NMR, GC-MS, SEM, and bomb calorimeter. May assist with biology equipment, as needed. Purchases needed parts to ensure that equipment functions properly.
- Facilitates departmental safety projects as directed by the University Safety Manager. Interdepartmental safety duties may be assigned on occasion in consultation with the home department.
- Performs additional related work as required.

Required Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a scientific field required.
- At least three years of experience in the coordination of lab operations, maintenance, procedures and instructions required.
- 40 Hours Hazwoper OSHA certification within 90 days of employment.
- Valid driver’s license required.

Preferred Qualifications:
- at least two (2) years’ experience at an institution of higher education
