Position Summary:

 

 

Federal Work-Study (FWS) Students in the Learning Resource Center support instructional initiatives, literacy development, and daily operations of the Center. Students gain hands-on professional experience through tutoring, instructional support, customer service, and resource management while contributing to a welcoming, organized, and student-centered learning environment. Responsibilities may include on-campus work, support in local P–12 schools, and assistance through virtual platforms, depending on program and departmental needs.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be eligible for Federal Work-Study funding.
  • Interest in education, literacy, customer service, or academic support services preferred.
  • Strong communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Willingness to learn new systems, procedures, and equipment operations.
  • Applicants must be enrolled as a JSU student taking at least six (3) hours per fall or spring semester.
  • If not a first-time student, the applicant must have a GPA of 2.00 or higher.
  • Selected applicants must provide evidence of student enrollment and GPA (unofficial transcript or printout of enrollment/GPA from MyJSU.
  • Must be eligible for Federal Work Study.
  • May not be a Dual Enrollment Student.

Notice Regarding International Students:

  • All international students must be in a valid immigration status.
  • Due to Visa requirements international students must be enrolled as a full-time JSU student and possess each of the following:
  1. Passport from their respective country.
  2. F-1 Student Visa or J-1 Exchange Student Visa.
  3. U.S. Customs Form I-94.
  4. Official photo identification.
  5. Official Social Security Card imprinted with “Valid for Work Only” or similar statement

Mandatory Training:

  • FERPA: Protecting Student Privacy
  • AL Ethics Commission Training
  • Assigned courses in Vector LMS

Position Required Training:

 

 

Machines & Equipment:

  • Receive training and safely operate equipment such as poster makers, printers, laminators, and other instructional support tools.
  • Follow established protocols for the proper use, care, and maintenance of instructional materials and equipment.
  • Assist the Director with inventory management, including tracking materials, organizing storage areas, and reporting shortages or maintenance needs.
  • Contribute to the general upkeep, organization, and cleanliness of the Learning Resource Center.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Instructional & Academic Support

  • Assist staff and faculty with the preparation and facilitation of PreK–6 reading and literacy activities.
  • Tutor PreK–6 students individually and in small groups to support reading development and academic growth.
  • Assist with the creation, organization, and maintenance of instructional materials, including lesson plans, games, manipulatives, and literacy resources.
  • Complete tutoring documentation and reports accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Participate in required trainings and workshops related to tutoring, literacy instruction, and student support.

Learning Resource Center Operations & Customer Service

  • Provide exceptional customer service to students, faculty, staff, and community patrons visiting the Learning Resource Center.
  • Assist patrons with locating instructional materials, equipment, and inventory items housed in the Resource Center.
  • Use the Learning Resource Center inventory system to check materials and equipment in and out accurately.
  • Follow established procedures for processing cash and non-cash payments, including the ability to make correct change.
  • Support daily front-desk operations and serve as a knowledgeable, professional representative of the Learning Resource Center.

Equipment & Resource Management

  • Work collaboratively with staff, faculty, peers, and supervisors.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to work with a diverse population of students, faculty, and community members in an inclusive and respectful manner.

Additional Information

Positions may be assigned based on individual skills, qualifications, availability, and departmental needs. Duties may evolve to meet the instructional and operational goals of the Learning Resource Center.
