Job Summary:
The Disability Services Coordinator is responsible for coordinating appropriate academic and other reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities. This employee works primarily with students who have learning disabilities, ADD/ADHD, chronic medical conditions, psychological disorders, physical disabilities, sensory impairments, and other disabilities. This employee is discreet and demonstrates a strong commitment to confidentially of student information. This employee helps the Director with the development of policies and procedures to enhance services to students, as well as providing technical assistance, consultation, and educational programming to the campus community and stakeholders.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Reviews and evaluates documentation of student’s disability, determines eligibility for services and requests reasonable accommodations as appropriate. Documentation may include medical records, psychological records, and educational records.
- Provides academic, personal and career guidance and academic coaching in addition to managing proctoring and special testing procedures for students with disabilities.
- Develops individualized plans to support access to courses, programs, facilities, services, and activities on campus.
- Facilitates groups designed for students with disabilities.
- Supports students in development of self-advocacy skills.
- Manages proctored testing and specialized testing procedures for students requesting testing accommodations.
- Serves as a consultant to faculty and staff in regard to reasonable accommodations in the academic setting and physical accessibility of campus facilities.
- Assists the director in the development of policies and procedures regarding provision of services for students with disabilities.
- Coordinates communication between faculty, staff, and prospective and enrolled students with disabilities.
- Documents, maintains, and reviews current and accurate case records, notes and related information in electronic and manual files. Maintains confidentiality in regard to record keeping and sharing of information.
- Develops and implements educational programming on disability related topics.
- Consults with faculty and staff regarding provision of reasonable accommodations and accessibility of institutional facilities.
- Works independently and as a member of a team.
- Participates in professional development activities.
- Networks with and participates in activities of community-based organizations serving individuals with disabilities.
- Participate in University committees, task forces, and networks as assigned.
- Teach selected courses for the Student Success Center
- Represents Disability Resources, Learning Support Resources, and the Student Success Center in campus events such as Spring and Fall preview days, Gamecock Orientation, graduations, etc.; assists with annual Deaf/Hard of Hearing College Prep Camp; and other outreach activities as identified.
- Assist students with assistive technology, alternative formats, and equipment requests; assess the needs of students with disabilities, provide instruction to students on the use of equipment and troubleshoots problems with the technology; and updates specialized software used by students with disabilities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, Education, Deaf Education, Special Education or related field required.
- Two (2) years’ experience working with individuals with disabilities.
