Job Summary:

The Quality Specialist is a key technical position supporting the federally funded expansion of the Additive Manufacturing Training and Innovation Laboratory. Working under the direction of the Principal Investigator/Program Manager, the incumbent plays a central role in transitioning newly acquired systems from installation and commissioning to routine laboratory operation. The position supports industry engagement, workforce development, and student learning within an applied manufacturing environment by applying extensive hands-on experience in manufacturing quality and inspection. The Quality Specialist translates real-world manufacturing requirements into effective measurement, inspection, verification, and process control workflows, ensuring laboratory operations align with industry standards, support advanced manufacturing initiatives, and promote high-quality training and operational outcomes.The position will work with the Dean of the CEPS, Department Heads and Directors to identify fundraising priorities and develop a plan to execute those objectives.

This is a full-time, five-year, grant-funded position dependent upon funding availability.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the establishment and day-to-day technical operation of the CMS reverse engineering and metrology laboratory.
  • Operate, program, and maintain dimensional inspection, metrology, testing, scanning, and advanced imaging systems.
  • Develop inspection strategies and measurement workflows appropriate for manufactured components and assemblies.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, dimensional requirements, tolerances, and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Develop and execute First Article Inspection (FAI) activities and associated inspection documentation.
  • Support Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) activities and understand the relationship between inspection results, process documentation, and manufacturing approval requirements.
  • Apply Statistical Process Control (SPC) methods and evaluate manufacturing process performance using process capability measures, including Cp and Cpk.
  • Analyze measurement and production data to identify variation, trends, and potential manufacturing process concerns.
  • Develop inspection plans, measurement methodologies, and appropriate sampling or verification strategies for manufacturing applications.
  • Perform dimensional inspection and verification using conventional and advanced measurement technologies.
  • Program and operate Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) for dimensional verification of manufactured components.
  • Support coordinate measurement, 3D scanning, CAD comparison, reverse engineering, and non-destructive inspection workflows.
  • Support material, hardness, surface, and other physical characterization activities as laboratory capabilities are deployed.
  • Assist manufacturers and CMS engineering personnel in determining appropriate inspection and measurement approaches for applied projects.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures, work instructions, equipment-specific safety documentation, inspection procedures, and related laboratory documentation.
  • Participate in equipment installation, commissioning, calibration, acceptance, and technical training.
  • Complete manufacturer or vendor training necessary to develop proficiency with newly acquired systems.
  • Develop training materials and hands-on instructional activities for CMS personnel, students, and external participants.
  • Assist with pilot training programs and CMS Certificate of Completion activities associated with metrology, quality, inspection, and reverse engineering.
  • Train and supervise student workers performing authorized laboratory activities. 
  • Maintain appropriate equipment, calibration, inspection, and operational records. 
  • Support continuous improvement of laboratory processes as equipment and capabilities mature.
  • Perform other related duties necessary to support the operation and development of the laboratory.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant professional experience in manufacturing quality, quality assurance, quality control, metrology, dimensional inspection, or a closely related industrial manufacturing function.
  • Practical experience with manufacturing quality processes and an understanding of how inspection and measurement activities support production, engineering, suppliers, and customers.
  • Equivalent combinations of education, technical training, professional certifications, and relevant industrial experience will be considered. Relevant industrial experience will be prioritized over formal academic credentials when evaluating a candidate’s ability to perform the technical functions of the position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in advanced dimensional inspection and CMM programming
  • Hexagon CMM experience and proficiency with PC-DMIS inspection software are strongly preferred
