University Student Assistant / ACE English Tutor SPRING 2018

Essential Functions:

English tutors provide individual and small group tutoring to students in the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) Tutoring Center. Tutors assist students academically by meeting with students on a regular basis to clarify learning problems and work on study skills. Other assistance might include: reviewing class material, discussing the text, predicting test questions, formulating ideas for papers, or working on solutions to problems. Tutoring is a supplement to classroom teaching. ACE tutors may also provide drop-in tutoring assistance to students based on requests for academic assistance. This position involves mandatory training, reporting, and evaluations.

Tutors must attend mandatory training sessions and required workshops, be flexible and available to work outside of their class schedules, must be dependable and punctual for scheduled appointments, complete tutorial reports in a timely manner, and work well with students in an academic environment. Additionally, tutors must be willing to work with a diverse student population.

Tutors must possess the knowledge of subject area material beyond a basic level; excellent communication skills; ability to provide an active learning experience for students by explaining difficult concepts and providing examples for explorations; ability to connect with students; use active listening skills to provide the best learning experience according to the needs of the student; openness to training and skills development; ability to work with students one-on-one and in small groups; possesses good time management skills; ability to plan effective tutoring sessions; ability to write tutorial reports reflective of the content and teaching objectives accomplished during each session.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3.0 college GPA or higher required
  • Must have earned an A or B in all courses you wish to tutor
  • Have faculty recommendation
  • Must have completed at least one semester of full-time attendance at JSU
  • Enrolled as a JSU student taking at least three (3) hours per fall or spring semester
  • Applicants must attach under “Transcript” an unofficial copy of their student transcript or class registration as evidence of student enrollment and GPA.
  • Must be willing to tutor during the evening hours and during times that do not conflict with your class schedule

    • Due to Visa requirements international students must be enrolled as a full-time JSU student and possess each of the following:
  1. Passport from their respective country.
  2. F-1 Student Visa or J-1 Exchange Student Visa.
  3. U.S. Customs Form I-94.
  4. Official photo identification.
  5. Official Social Security Card imprinted with “Valid for Work Only” or similar statement.
