Normal Work Schedule:

8:00 am - 4:30 pm  Monday - Friday

Job Summary:

The Academic Advisor is responsible for providing guidance to students to help recognize and achieve their educational goals, examine academic programs, recognize their academic strengths and select a major; works closely with professors and other university administrators and stay up-to-date on program changes.

Essential Functions:

  • Advises students about academic requirements and selection of courses.
  • Disseminates information on institutional policies and procedures.
  • Evaluates and determines the transfer of credits; research course descriptions to determine transferability.
  • Reviews and interprets the placement and other standardized test scores, unofficial transcripts and courses prerequisites.
  • Performs and interprets degree audits.
  • Knows graduation requirements.
  • Assists students with career planning.
  • Monitors student registration activities and recommend solutions to academic difficulties.
  • Maintains systematic and frequent contact with advisees.
  • Coordinates communications to the students regarding such things as registration and academic probation; this could include the maintenance of a student listserv.
  • Maintains accurate records (including electronic records) of interactions with students.
  • Be a student advocate when appropriate.
  • Serves as liaison and foster intentional relationships with other advisors, offices, schools, and departments.
  • Refers students to the appropriate specialized staff for such issues as comprehensive counseling, financial assistance, study abroad, etc.
  • Participates in the development, implementation, review, presentation, and revision of orientations for the first-time college students and transfer students.
  • Stays abreast of changing institutional information including admissions requirements, new programs, course changes, deadlines, important dates, costs, expanding facilities, updates in college-wide initiatives, transfer requirements, and state and federal mandates.
  • Engages in professional development activities, including but not limited to, memberships in professional organizations; attendance at conferences, workshops, division, and department training sessions; stay current with information technology skills.
  • Participates in the planning, implementation, and the evaluation of the academic advisement program's goals and objectives.
  • Participates in institutional student development and retention programs.
  • Serves as resource for faculty/staff.
  • Develops advising materials and presentations to support individual and group student sessions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, or related student service area, and
  • two (2) years’ related work experience in a higher education setting

Preferred Qualifications:

  • experience in a college/university advising or placement office
  • familiarity with JSU and School of Business and Industry
