Essential Functions:

This is a Student Assistant position within a public university. The employee is responsible for student affairs operations and reports to the Coordinator, First & Second Year Experience. This position is responsible for assisting with special events within the Dean of Students Office including, but not limited to: Miss JSU, Collegiate Legislature, and marketing for the Coordinator, First & Second Year Experience. The graduate assistant also assists the Coordinator, First & Second Year Experience in the areas of Gamecock Orientation, Homecoming, Fraternity and other duties assigned. Work is assigned with general instructions from the Coordinator, First & Second Year Experience and reviewed for effectiveness and adherence to office and departmental goals.

(1)   Serves as advisor to Freshman Forum. (Selects Freshman Forum Mentors, Coordinates member selection process, office meetings, leadership development training, and events for Freshman Forum with the assistance of Freshman Forum Mentors. Maintains the budgets and account of Freshman Forum. Serves as administrator and editor of Freshman Forum pages within jsu.edu/student life.)

 

(2)   Assists Coordinator, First & Second Year Experience in planning Gamecock Orientation. (Assists Coordinator, First & Second Year Experience in selection and training of Gamecock Orientation Leaders, Coordinates and runs music and lighting, Coordinates with other campus office to create browse session at Gamecock Orientation, Coordinates publications and presentations for Gamecock Orientation.)

 

(3)   Attends the nation conference of the National Orientation Association.

 

(4)   Assist in planning Freshman Convocation in conjunction with the Office of Alumni Affairs. (Coordinates with JSU Cheerleaders, Cocky, Southerners and Faculty Senate for the execution of Freshman Convocation and oversees all aspects of Freshman Convocation and serves as director of event alongside the Coordinator, First & Second Year Experience.)

 

(5)   Serves on the Common Reading Program selection committee.

 

(6)   Coordinates tables and student for spring and fall Preview Day.

 

(7)   Assists in teaching STU 101.

 

(8)   Assist in production of Miss JSU Scholarship Pageant including light, sound and general assistance.

 

(9)   Reports notes to the Coordinator, First & Second Year Experience to be included in Board of Trustee notes (Freshman Forum, Collegiate Legislature, Gamecock Orientation.)

 

(10)  Performs other duties assigned by the Coordinator, First & Second Year   Experience.

 

Required Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

1.         Excellent communication skills, written and oral.

2.         Demonstrates effective public speaking skills

3.         Knowledge of the Dean of Students responsibilities and major events.

4.         An understanding and commitment to encouraging and developing student involvement.

5.         An eagerness to develop and mentor campus leaders.

6.         The ability and willingness to communicate with the Coordinator, First & Second Year

            Experience , co-workers, campus directors, students, administration and other contacts in

            a professional manner.

7.         Ability to read and comprehend written materials encountered on the job.

8.         Ability to gather and analyze information in order to make recommendations.

9.         Ability to work in a team atmosphere with minimal supervision.

10.       Willingness to accept night and weekend hours.

11.       Basic computer knowledge (Microsoft office, internet, etc.)

12.       Experience using computer programs and social media outlets to create publications,

           documents, and records.

13.       Experience creating professional presentations to be used across campus for a variety of

            audiences.

14.       Knowledge of website editing through Cascade Server.

15.       Basic production knowledge and skills.

16.       Basic knowledge of music editing, sound board skills and lighting board skills.

17.       Developed creative writing skills.

18.       Ability to learn and adapt to changing situations and requirements.

19.       Ability to set goals and objectives and develop strategies to achieve those goals

Minimum Qualifications:

•         Applicants must be enrolled as a JSU student taking at least three (3) hours per fall or spring semester. (Requirements for international students below.*)

•         If not a first time student, applicant must have a GPA of 2.00 or higher.

•         Selected applicants must provide evidence of student enrollment and GPA (unofficial transcript or printout of enrollment/GPA from MyJSU.
