Job Summary:

The Director of Talent Management & Development coordinates and facilitates efforts to ensure employee relations, performance management, and learning & development are aligned with, and support JSU’s strategic goals. The Director partners with Division leaders, managers, and supervisors to identify and resolve employee relations issues; provide assistance with the interpretation and application of relevant policies, laws and regulations; and provides direct 'hands-on' consultation to employees on appropriate resolutions to workplace issues and concerns while establishing and supporting a culture of respect and civility.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for all aspects of employee relations; provides effective service delivery and partnership with managers and staff, and ensures compliance with university procedures and federal and state regulations.
  • Conducts investigations of employee relations issues and determines appropriate actions (discipline, counseling, coaching, training, etc.)
  • Assesses the employee relations climate, along with data from disputes and investigations, to identify and address employee-management issues and concerns.
  • Maintains employee relations incident/case tracking for resolution and reporting purposes. Prepares statistical reports, using records of actions taken concerning disputes, investigations, and complaints to identify problem areas.
  • Provides on-demand coaching and instruction for managers and HR staff on employee relations procedures including timely handling and proper investigation of complaints.
  • Advises management and employees on personnel policies and procedures. 
  • Develops and manages effective employee relations programs to foster positive employee relations. Communicates regularly with supervisors, managers, and other representatives to promote Human Resources services and to provide education and training on policies and legal compliance.
  • Facilitates a consultative approach to advising managers and staff in resolving workplace concerns.
  • Administers all aspects of the University's performance management program.
  • Collaborates, as necessary, with multiple offices to ensure coordinated service delivery such as the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Office of the Provost (for matters related Academic Affairs Units), and the Title IX Office.  
  • Advises management on appropriate use of disciplinary action and review of separations of employment.
  • Drives a culture of accountability for performance management and employee development.
  • Develops strategies to help drive employee engagement, productivity, and development.
  • Conducts needs assessments to determine training and development needs across the University.
  • Develops, facilitates, and delivers training on issues relating to Human Resources including job and role specific training; partners with JSU Continuing Education and Outreach as a referral for employee training.
  • Identifies and recommends the implementation of processes to support efficient training administration and recordkeeping process (i.e., Learning Management System (LMS)).
  • Coaches and develops leaders to improve employee experience by executing department-specific action plans. Ensures leadership accountability to create and manage action plan completion.
  • Oversees New Hire onboarding to properly introduce new employees to the organization.
  • Promotes a work environment that is fun and productive. Collaborates with various Division leaders to identify and select programming which meets the strategic objectives of the university.
  • Represents HR on various committees, serves as consultant for department-specific recognition activities and attends meetings as assigned.
  • Leads rewards and recognition team strategy and outcomes including reviewing, evaluating and making recommendations for departmental recognition programs.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Business, Human Resources, Psychology or related field 
  • At least 3 years’ experience at a management/supervisory level
  • Previous experience in a talent development focused role or
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Human Resource Management, or other related,
  • At least five (5) years’ experience in a higher education administrative role,
  • Requires well-developed and highly effective listening, communication, presentation and persuasive skills, including the ability to receive, process and present information to diverse audiences while maintaining effective collaborative relationships.
