Job Summary:

Jacksonville State University’s David L. Walters Department of Music invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty appointment as Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities to help expand and maintain the prominence of a highly visible regional music education and choral program, to begin August 2019.  Qualified applicants must have a completed DMA or Ph.D. in Choral Conducting or Choral Music.  ABD applicants will be considered with the expectation that all degree requirements will be completed by appointment date.

Essential Functions:

  • Conducting three choirs: Chamber Singers, a mixed chamber choir;  A Cappella Choir, a 50-60 voice choir; and Civic Chorale, a community chorus
  • Teaching responsibilities include: undergraduate and graduate courses related to the choral discipline (conducting, choral rehearsal methods, choral literature, etc.)
  • Other duties include: overseeing organizational planning for all choral undertakings; offering additional courses commensurate with the applicant's skills or research interests; maintaining a public presence through print, broadcast and social media; and providing leadership and mentorship to undergraduate and graduate music education students. 
  • The candidate will serve on committees in the Department, School, and University; contribute to the ongoing development and administration of the Music Program; and maintain an established research/scholarship/creative activity agenda sufficient for tenure and advancement.
  • The candidate will be active in recruitment for the Department of Music as well as attracting and/or retaining new members of the student and community ensembles.
  • Other desired abilities include: a proven track record of experience in public/private teaching of grades 6-12 in choral music education and an ability to provide professional development to area middle and high school choral music educators as well as choral clinics for their students.
