Varies, depending on lab schedule and department and School needs10+ weeks of recruitment travel required in the Fall, with an additional 3 – 5 weeks in the Spring.

$36,500.00 (26 hours per week)

Job Summary:

The Temporary Assistant Scientific Lab and Lab Safety Coordinator position requires strong foundational knowledge in biology and biological lab techniques in order to organize and prepare academic labs for multiple courses and to implement and monitor lab protocols that protect the health and safety of students, staff, and faculty. The position requires professionalism in working with faculty, graduate teaching assistants, students, and external entities. This position will require the successful candidate to work independently with minimal guidance and instruction from the Scientific Lab and Lab Safety Coordinator, faculty or the department head. The assistant coordinator will be familiar with complex equipment and its maintenance and repair needs. Work will be reviewed while in progress and upon completion for compliance to procedures. The assistant coordinator will directly report to the coordinator and department head and will be evaluated by the department head.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates the instructional lab program for students to include conveying technical information to those enrolled in or teaching labs.
  • Instructs students and faculty in the safe use of hazardous material ; updates faculty on their legal responsibilities in use of hazardous materials in instruction and scholarly research.
  • Trains students and faculty in safety and experimental protocols for delicate and expensive instrumentation for chemistry.
  • Maintains the facilities physical inventory of lab equipment, hazardous and other materials to include (but not limited to) counting, stocking, ordering, and compiling a list of frequently used supplies and equipment.
  • Ensures sufficient inventory of chemicals in the lab. Arranges for purchasing of supplies for labs and arranges safe pick up from supplier. May be required to pick up supplies from supplier.
  • Oversees lab environments in Martin Hall for the purpose of safety and health of students and faculty.
  • Ensures high levels of safety and efficiency of lab operations and provides security of equipment.
  • Monitors disposal of hazardous material in Martin Hall to ensure safety of students and faculty.
  • Assists with and facilitates instruction in the laboratories.
  • Works with students as they perform lab assignments and provides feedback to faculty on students’ performance.
  • Sets up the laboratory for student assignments according to specifications from faculty member, i.e. prepares chemical solutions, media, cultures, etc.
  • Supervises graduate teaching assistants, work study students, and students in lab practicum.
  • Ensures that lab equipment is clean, safe, and in proper working order.
  • Ensures that the classroom or instructional environment is healthful and safe and generally conducive to learning.
  • Facilitates departmental safety projects as directed by the University Safety Manager. Interdepartmental safety duties may be assigned on occasion in consultation with the home department.
  • Performs additional related work as required.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with at least 18 graduate hours in the field of Biology
  • Must possess computer skills sufficient to use word processing and spreadsheet software
  • A valid driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a scientific field
